St Pete/Clearwater Best For Families

St. Pete/Clearwater: Fodor’s Names Clearwater Beach “Best for Families”

“Gorgeous” sand, “warm, clear” surf lands local favorite on travel giant A-list

St. Pete/Clearwater, FL (June 1, 2009) – Like the waves on the area’s 35 miles of white-sand beaches, the awards for the beaches of St. Pete/Clearwater area keep rolling in.

Fodor’s Travel Publications, America’s largest travel publisher, has named Clearwater Beach one of the East Coast’s 7 Best Family Beaches, according to the company’s weekly travel newsletter.

Clearwater Beach was the only Florida beach to make the list, with beaches from South Carolina, North Carolina, New Jersey, New York, Massachusetts and Maine also taking honors.

Known for accommodating even the pickiest of beach-goers, Clearwater Beach was particularly impressive to Fodor’s editors, who referred to it as a “gem for families” with “gorgeous white sand, attentive lifeguards, shallow waters that are clear and warm, a pier, and plenty showers and restrooms.”

“I think this recognition really underscores the versatility of Clearwater Beach,” said DT Minich, executive director of Visit St. Pete/Clearwater. “It’s a destination that has something for everyone, from family-friendly resorts and pirate cruises for the kids, to romantic getaway for couples to countless watersports options and a buzzing nightlife scene for the younger crowd.”

Consistently recognized for its beauty, Clearwater Beach has been named “Best City Beach on the Gulf of Mexico” by Condé Nast Traveler and Dr. Stephen P. Leatherman – a.k.a. “Dr. Beach.” Readers of USAToday.com also included Clearwater Beach on their top 10 list of “The Best Beaches from Maine to Hawaii.”

The Fodor’s list comes on the heels of a TripAdvisor study released last week that named two St. Pete/Clearwater area beaches among the ten best in the country. Fort De Soto’s North Beach topped the annual list for the second straight year, while nearby Honeymoon Island was ranked ninth.
